The Japanese Mythology series is a series of digital and gouache illustrations exploring Japanese mythology with an emphasis on its diversity, celebrating a wide range of deities that are disabled, immigrants and more. I explore a variety of styles in this series, ranging from children’s book illustration-style paintings to illustrations drawing heavily on Buddhist scrolls. I combine research into the deities I depict with personal experience from my heritage. My aim in depicting this diversity is also to see more of myself in depictions of the Japanese divine – making them more familiar as a love letter to myself and to the deities themselves. The Japanese Mythology series is an ongoing, multi-year project.
